Our good friend and partner Mark Biberstein passed away on February 13, 2013, in Wichita, Kansas. Mark was born on June 25, 1966, to Mike and Gail Biberstein in Emporia, Kansas. He graduated from Santa Fe Trail High School in Carbondale, Kansas, in 1984 and then attended Emporia State University, where he met Kimberly A. Riley of Elkhart, Kansas, whom he would later marry on May 26, 1990. Mark and Kim had two children, Devon Nicole and Mason Riley, both of the home. While at Emporia State, Mark served as the student body president and was an active member of the Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity. Following his graduation, magna cum laude, from Emporia State in 1988, Mark worked briefly at Koch Industries before deciding to attend law school at the University of Kansas, where he served as an editor of the KU Law Review and graduated Order of the Coif in 1992. After graduation, he went to work as an associate attorney at Foulston Siefkin, where he had clerked one summer while he was in school. He was elected partner in 1998. Within the law firm, Mark served on a variety of committees, mentored several young lawyers, established and maintained a successful litigation and trial practice, and more than pulled his weight. Outside the firm, Mark did the same. He was active in both the Wichita and Kansas Bar Associations, including serving on and chairing several committees. He also was active in the community, having served on the boards of Communities in Schools (also served as a mentor to a high school student), Andover Advantage Fund, American Heart Association (also served as chair of the board), and Emporia State University Alumni Association. Mark fulfilled each of these responsibilities with the same diligence and determination that defined his legal career. In his spare time, Mark had a series of interests-poker, team roping, no-bake cookie eating, organizing (and drafting the rules for) the law firm holiday ornament exchange, learning to play guitar, listening to country music, fly fishing, quoting lines from Animal House-many of which persisted for years and each of which commanded Mark's passionate-some would say obsessive-attention. Mark is survived by his wife, Kim; two children, Devon and Mason; mother, Gail of Andover; father, Mike of Las Vegas; two sisters, Sara (Troy) Gott of Wichita and Laura "Lucy" (Rick) Holmes of Wilmington, DE; mother- and father-in-law, Alice Faye and James Riley of Durant, OK; sister-in-law, Melody (Lew) Thomas of Elkhart, KS; and his beloved nephews and nieces. Visitation with family 6:00-8:00 PM, Friday, February 15, 2013, at East Heights United Methodist Church, 4407 E. Douglas Ave., Wichita, KS 67218. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2013, at 11 AM, also at East Heights United Methodist Church. To honor his service to our community, a memorial has been established with Communities in Schools of Wichita/Sedgwick County (ciswichita.org), 412 S. Main, Suite 212, Wichita, KS 67202. Share online condolences at www.CozineMemorial.com. Services by Broadway Mortuary.
