This summer, Foulston Siefkin will be hosting a series of 4 Lunchtime workshops for HR Professionals at our offices in the Waterfront addressing HR issues relating to employee benefits and military leave. Health & Welfare Benefit Plans – Wednesday, June 4, 2008Federal law imposes detailed compliance requirements on health & welfare benefit plans, including rules under ERISA, COBRA, HIPAA, and the Internal Revenue Code. This seminar will provide an overview of common health & welfare benefit programs and the applicable compliance requirements. In addition, this seminar will address some recent updates regarding these rules, including rules affecting wellness plans and cafeteria plans. Military Leave and USERRA Issues – Thursday, June 19, 2008As the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan continue, the military is relying heavily on your citizen-soldier employees to serve longer and more frequent active-duty assignments. The Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA) and certain Kansas statutes protect members of the armed forces in various areas including leave, reinstatement, and benefits continuation. In addition, Congress recently amended the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) to require military family leave under certain conditions. This seminar will discuss the ins /outs of the military leave issues under these laws. Retirement Benefit Plans – Wednesday, July 9, 2008Many employers maintain one or more "qualified" retirement benefit plans, such as a 401(k) or 403(b) plan or a defined-benefit pension plan. These arrangements are subject to detailed compliance requirements under ERISA and the Internal Revenue Code. This seminar will provide an overview of common retirement benefit plans and the applicable compliance requirements. This seminar also will address some common errors that arise in the administration of retirement benefit plans and the options available for correcting those errors. Executive Compensation – Wednesday, August 6, 2008Congress made sweeping changes to the treatment of executive compensation arrangements when it enacted Code Section 409A in 2004. This seminar will provide an overview of the Section 409A requirements and the compliance steps that must be taken this year. This seminar also will provide an overview of other common executive compensation arrangements and compliance requirements, including split-dollar life insurance, stock options, restricted stock, phantom stock, change-in-control agreements, and Section 457 plans.
